21 questions is one of the oldest getting-to-know-you games around, and it works even better with someone you already love. The idea is simple: take turns asking, answer honestly, and follow the answers wherever they lead. Twenty-one questions later, you almost always know something new about each other.
Below are the rules for playing as a couple, then six ready-made sets of 21: fun, deep, and flirty, plus sets for new couples, married and long-term couples, and long distance couples. That is 126 questions, or six good game nights.
How to play 21 questions as a couple
- Pick one set. Choose a set below that fits your mood. If you cannot decide, whoever did the dishes picks.
- Take turns. The asker reads a question and the other person answers first. Then the asker answers the same question. Swap roles for the next one, so you each ask about ten or eleven.
- Answer honestly. Short answers are fine. Made-up answers are not. If you need a moment to think, take it.
- Follow-ups are allowed. After any answer, the listener can ask one follow-up, like “What happened next?” or “Why that one?” Follow-ups do not count toward the 21.
- Use your passes. Each of you gets three passes per game. A pass skips the question, and nobody has to explain why.
- Stop at 21, or earlier. A full set usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. If one question turns into a long conversation, let it, and finish the set another night.
Other ways to play
- The classic way. One of you asks all 21 questions while the other answers, then you switch. It takes longer, but it gives each person the spotlight for a while.
- Over text. Send one question at a time during the day, and save the follow-ups for dinner.
- Guess first. Before your partner answers, guess what they will say. If you like keeping score, the couples quiz turns that into a proper game.
A weekly game night like this fits right into the Weekly Care layer of your Couple Care Routine, the small, recurring rituals that keep a relationship healthy.

Make it a weekly ritual
Pick one night a week, maybe Sunday after dinner, and play one set. Six sets give you six weeks of game nights. By the time you come back to the first set, some answers will already have changed, and noticing that is part of the fun.
On weeks when you want something lighter, swap in a quick round of this or that questions for couples, a few would you rather questions, or a game of never have I ever for couples. If you would rather not pick questions at all, the PumPum relationship app has daily questions for couples ready to go.
Common questions
How long does a game of 21 questions take?
Usually 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how many follow-ups you ask. There is no need to finish in one sitting. A great tangent is worth more than getting to question 21.
Can you play 21 questions over text?
Yes. Send one question at a time and answer whenever you have a free minute. It works especially well for long distance couples, because a set can stretch across a whole week and across time zones.
What if one of us does not want to answer a question?
Use a pass. Each of you gets three per game, and nobody has to explain why they used one. If a question touches something tender, you can always come back to it later, when it feels right.
Final note
21 questions is a small game with a big payoff: half an hour of paying close attention to each other, on purpose. Pick a set, put your phones down, and let the answers surprise you. Even after years together, they usually do.
